Wrapping the year up

Hi everyone,

So its been a full year of Kids for Earth (actually, a bit more).

First of all, and most importantly: sorry to everyone who participated to the YTL Climate Change workshop; I have been unacceptably lazy in putting anything up :P I’ve had a lot going on, but I hope you are all keeping to date with the list! Myself and my sister are going to France for the next six weeks, but you can contact us on this website, or you can email me at gabrieltseng@kidsforearthasia.com

Next, after a year at work, we’ve got a whole line of products, which we’ll be putting up on the ‘our products‘ page. This includes our ‘Billy the Plastic Bag’ book, which was launched during YTL’s Climate Change Week, with Ms Ruth Yeoh.

As well as working with YTL, we have also worked with astro to create a one minute video that is on astro TVIQ ( channel 552). We plan to create four more fillers with astro.

Now, we have shown the Billy the Plastic Bag presentation to around 2000 children, not counting everyone who saw it on astro TVIQ. We have published a book, and now sell 6 different bags. We’ve been on several newspapers, and we have been interviewed live both on TV and a radio: TV3 and BFM 89.9. Also, we have hosted 2 workshops, one in cooperation with Leo club of Raub, and one in cooperation with YTL’s climate change week.

It has been a great year, and thank you for everyone who helped us and supported us.

Climate Change Week YTL

Climate change week is finally here, happening on the 19th June. Our official Billy the Plastic Bag book will be launched along with the opening of our ‘Bring Kids For Earth to your school’ Workshop. If  you want to take part, contact me at raphaelletseng@kidsforearthasia.com. You have to get a team of 4 or 5 kids from the ages 10 to 15 to come. 19th June is a Saturday and the workshop/launch will start at 11.00am. Hope to see some of you guys there!

Oh yeah, there is also going to be an eco bazaar running throughout most of the day. Kids For Earth will be selling bags and books there.

Talk for ISKL Green Week

Grade 4 listening to Raphaelle's presentation

ISKL had their ‘Green’ week from the 19th to the 23rd April. To kick-start the week, they asked Kids For Earth to come and do the Billy the Plastic Bag Presentation for the Grade 4’s or Year 5. The 6 classes added up to about 120 kids. We asked them to design a poster for the competition and their response was quite enthusiastic so we are hoping to get some pretty good posters.

The dead line is May 14th and Poster need to be handed back to Mr Ward.

The 3 winners will get a Billy the plastic bag book and a cotton bag!

5 poster competition winners

Thanks to all who participated, you’ll all get a bag!

Response wasn’t as good as we hoped, but we will use the posters for our talks.

Talk #4: Garden International School

CIMG0061On Friday 9th October, we had another school talk (busy week!). This one was in front of a lot more kids, round about 800. Luckily, I did it with Isaac and Gautam, so it was less stressful than other times. The talk went well, and the kids seemed quite interested.

Like in Sri Hartamas, we offered them to design posters; our first inter-school competition!

10 designs picked!

When I did a talk in Jalan Bellamy (our first talk!), I gave the kids a competition: draw a design that can be printed on grocery bag.

We got very good response, with over 70 designs being entered. But now, we had to choose ten, that would be posted around Alice Smith, so that five can be chosen by the students.

So on Tuesday 6th of October, 7 of us got together to judge the bags.

The judging panel consisted of representatives from Climate Change Week, the Alice Smith School.

The ten designs we chose (and the five winners) will be posted up later. (They are currently with the school).

Venue #3: Seri Hartamas Talk

On the Monday 5th October, we did ourCIMG0025 first talk in a local school, which was really what we were aiming for.

The talk went relatively well; the kids all listened, and some of them laughed!

I did this talk with Isaac, who will also be helping with the talk in Garden International School on Friday.

Thanks Isaac!

Venue #2 : Lycee Francais de Kuala Lumpur : Summary

This presentation was much more akward than the JB presentation; French is not my schooling language, and some of the words were abit akward; I’d say the word quietly (and probably wrongly) and continue speaking! However, it was well recieved by the kids (or so I was told) and I think I took my mistakes with enough humour for them to be largely ignored by the kids. They were very attentive, and all in all, I’m very happy with it.

Merci Julie, pour m’avoir aider, et d’avoir ete tellement encourageante; sans toi, je n’aurais pas pu faire la presention!

Venue #2: LFKL – Lycee Francais de Kuala Lumpur

Our second venue will be to some thirty people in the French school, but one vital change is that we should theoretically be able to give out free grocery bags. (I’m checking the prices, but I think it would be possible.) I’ll be showing the same thing as in JB, but this is like proof to me that we are growing. (It’s very gratifying!)
